::Raining umbrellas:: Assignment - A Life Story's Collage

Raining Umbrellas: an artist's collage

The briefing was to create a collage which explained who we are as artists today. We, the students, ie Little Miss Joey.

I had a hard time coming up with a collage which would reflect why I'm an artist today. I think my main difficulty was that I don't see myself as an artist. I'm only now beginning to use the word creative. Which I love, by the way. Love. But moving on...

In order of appearance in my life, there's photography, just because Dad always loved it and I believe that's where I get it from. That said, it was the last creative hobby I found. Interesting, huh? Or maybe not. In any case, it's the one I enjoy the most now and that I do more often. Mum hand sews and embroiders like noone I know. She's an artist and did a lot of my toys when I was little. She's an inspiration on the crafty side of things... So this is how I started.

What moves me? Light does. It's the single most important thing in my photography (and life in general). Closely followed by colour. Colour is a big thing for me and I love how it impacts a photo. And then there's my recently discovered niche... little snippets of life (or in its less interesting form, stuff!).

I don't think the map of my inspiration would be complete without mentioning Flickr and the huge source of beautiful images I see there everyday. I love seeing other people's photos and how we all see the world in so many different ways. And there's the blogging community; I find it incredibly inspirational to read the blogs I read, powered by Google Reader (thank you Google people!). I have a preference for photography, crafty and decor blogs, but looking at my list now it's very eclectic indeed.

If you want to see the original notebook sketch, here it is

Yet another journey of self discovery which I quite enjoyed!

  1. Did I already say your handwriting is art in se? And yes, you are an artist! Being eclectic can be seen as a gift, even if being inspired by so many things makes you not wanna go to bed and have some relaxing and necessary sleep ;-)

  2. All these blog posts - the creativity course is obviously working. No way I can keep up with you...

Like the collage and the way it's arranged on the notebook, nice idea.

  4. I'm with you about how it's difficult to call oneself an "artist" - but you've definitely got that creativity rolling!

  6. This is just awesome. I love the sketchbook thing. and the color. and the photos.... oh, heck, I just love ALL of it. I also like how you made a sketch of your idea first! I never go in with a plan, it just kinda start in one place and end up somewhere entirely different. LOL.
(Your handwriting is exquisite, I agree :) )

  7. Thanks everyone :D
I'm sitting here with a huge smile at your comments, so sweet!
About the handwriting... double line school books thanks to my 3rd grade teacher :D She'd be so pleased with your comments :)

@cococita: definitely makes me not want to get to bed or eat lunch properly... this is brilliant!

@Dobbin: yes, you can! Get working!

@vicki: thank you for this assignment; I've discovered so many things about myself already... really enjoyable but also useful.

@Wendy: thanks for understanding :)Really amazed at how the course got me going from the word go :)

@Fenny: Thank you :) I thought it would be useful to have the original one for comparison :)

@primachild: thank you so much!! I'm not that organised with the planning, this is how I get the ball rolling. I sat at our dinner table with a blank head and a blank notebook and started writing the post first and then the sketch popped into my head (I'm very schematic in my line of thought) and then it appeared :) I learned that's how I get creative :) Brilliant!

  16. My first comment across our creative table, was 'Joey, how did you do that?!, that's amazing!!'

I really liked the eye line the middle of the pictures in the centre, and paired them as colour themes. The freestyle on the sides are awesome, because it shows to me both sides of your creative personality, the organised and the free flowing.

Everyone's handwriting looks so different in a photograph... even to me, it looks different and I see it every day.
